That’s a big deal! One that will require courage

That’s a big deal! One that will require courage, a lot of thinking, so much to consider and not to mention the heartache that is involved whether you are the one leaving or being left. Deciding to end a marriage is never going to be a simple, easy or a happy process.

But wait … why are you thinking of leaving your marriage?

When I ask this question from the many ladies I speak with, I get all the typical answers you can expect from a woman who is hurt, lonely, sad, neglected, unseen, unheard, insignificant, unloved and the list goes on.

My take on ending relationships is slightly different. While I accept that none of the above are acceptable in a union. You absolutely should be seen, heard, loved etc but there is so much you don’t know. And that is the scary part.

When we live in a highly emotional environment, when we are constantly triggered by someone else’s behaviours, there is so much to explore before making any drastic decisions. I don’t feel that many of the women I speak to are equipped well enough internally to take a step like this.

Self awareness is crucial before getting into a marriage or before leaving a marriage. It is incredibly sad to see young women going into marriages without knowing who they truly are and woman leaving marriages without knowing how much their childhood traumas, wounds play a part in who they are as a person and why their marriage turned out the way it did.

Without understanding why you are triggered, why you behave the way that you do, why you have different parts of you telling you to do different things, it really is not the right time to make a big decision such as leaving a marriage.

When we begin anything with a question, it is a great start, it builds curiosity and opens our mind to many other possibilities and perspectives which we may not have considered before, so questions are good … having said that, sometimes, a question can be framed completely wrong and therefore the answer will inevitably not fit, it will also be wrong.

Life is a precious gift of God, one that needs to be appreciated and used in the very best way to live it in a dignified manner. Life comes with challenges, suffering and often unimaginable pain, we all know and accept this. But we often get so caught up in the suffering and are desperately looking for answers. But if we are searching in the wrong place then we will either not find any answers or find the wrong answers. Often we blame others and even blame God for the happenings in our life.

By putting the focus on your external environment for the suffering in our lives, we are always going to remain a victim.

When we can empower ourselves to look within and find what this pain is here to teach us, it changes everything. This starts with awareness of infinite other perspectives that we can choose to look at any given situation from.

When we are curious about the lesson and the inherent gift within the pain, we explore a territory within us that has endless opportunities to grow, to live with satisfaction, fulfilment, peace, hope, love, stability, confidence and above all faith. This is expansion of our consciousness.

I want you to challenging your perspective the next time you feel hurt, shift your perspective and watch your response, emotions and actions also radically shift.

This can require some inner work and that’s okay. Be compassionate towards yourself and if you need support, be okay with reaching out. One of the things we need to become more open to is asking for help when we need it.

To really practice this, we have to be able to be present. Many people talk about presence but when we can truly become present, every action, every mundane task can become one that awakens us further and further each day. It reveals to us our attachments to the ego. Through this stillness, we become aware of what consumes us and then we can consciously choose to transcend from what is constantly limiting us.

It is the ego using our resources to distract us and keep us on old patterns and beliefs which no longer serve us. It keeps us away from expanding our consciousness and awareness. It hinders all progress and keeps us stuck.

I will share with you just two of the most powerful ways to become present:

1- Shukar, Gratitude.
This is one of the most powerful states to be in. When we are grateful, we cannot be hateful. Gratitude instils a trust in God, a genuine acceptance of what is, an open mindedness of what is to be. It is closely tied with humility and can be done by deeply becoming present with the very current moment, observing and absorbing what is in and around us and becoming completely content with the plans of Allah.

2- Meditating,
This doesn’t have to be an elaborate exercise. Make it as simple as possible and even 5 minutes a day can make huge shifts and a very short period.
So sit with intention, breathe deeply and just watch the mind to gain an awareness of your inner state without attaching to any of the thoughts or feelings.

We live in a world that is designed to keep us distracted. All the algorithms are against us, pulling us every direction possible. So if we don’t make a conscious effort of becoming present, we always remain in low vibration, irradiated, just running on pre-programmed patterns.

If you’re a single parent, or if you have gone through an experience that has made you feel alone or helpless, you may feel as if you aren’t capable of running your own life anymore. You might end up letting other people make decisions for you.

When the decisions you make depend too much on what others want you to do, you may feel as if you are losing control of your life. When things don’t go your way, you may end up resenting the people who make decisions for you.

The fact of the matter is that people give you advice and suggestions based on their own limited experiences. They don’t know what you’re going through or what your life is like. They don’t know about the variables and how certain decisions can affect the big picture in your life.

People give advice based on their own experiences, experiences that differ from yours in every way. It’s okay to take advice but you should remember that this advice may not be the best step for you to take.

It’s human nature to get defensive. When someone says something negative or insulting to you, your first instinct is to fight back, to defend yourself, to say something in your own favour.

However, by having a reaction, you are giving the person the satisfaction of knowing they managed to get a rise out of you which is often what they mean to do. You don’t want the person insulting you to feel better about their ability to trigger you.

Instead, stay calm. Don’t make them believe that they have any power over you. Look them dead in the eye and question their own feelings and self-esteem.

This will make them question their intention or at the very least stop them in their tracks since people who put others down usually have issues of their own. Making them believe that you might know something about those issues is a way to establish your own power over them.

You may constantly hear self-care gurus telling yo

You may constantly hear self-care gurus telling you that you need to practice self-love. Despite knowing and agreeing that self-love is necessary, many people find themselves unable to practice and believe in it.

You may feel as if you don’t deserve to love yourself, or as if loving yourself is some sort of sin. You may have been conditioned to believe that you don’t deserve love, even from yourself.

It is time to break this myth. There is nothing wrong with loving oneself. Self-love is something Allah has sent us with. We all have self-love inside of us; the only thing we need to do is unleash it.

To start the journey to self-love, you need to eradicate self-hate. When self-hate exists, there is no space to practice self-love.

Know that by loving yourself, you are indirectly loving Allah. You are praising the attributes Allah has given you. That isn’t arrogance, that is appreciating your qualities.
